While the retail format is how retailers are able to do retail strategy mix or mix of strategies that type of merchandise, services given, pricing strategy, promotion and advertising strategy, lay out and design strategies, typical location and customer services). While the retailer competitive advantage is the advantage over the competition that can not be done by a competitor and can be applied in a long time.
Strategic competitive advantage is the most important thing in retail marketing strategy. Build competitive advantage means that the retailer is building a solid bastion of retail market competition in the market. When the retailer managed to build a competitive advantage with a strong and sturdy it would be difficult for competitors to imitate or follow the strategy of competitive advantage in the market and win customers.

There are seven important opportunity for retailers to build competitive advantage: 
1.) Customer loyalty.
2.) Locations.
3.) Human resource management.
4.) Information systems and distribution.
5.) Unique merchandise.
6.) Relationship with the supply chain.
7.) Customer service.
