Integrated Pest Management to control pests in warehouse

Bookmark and Share
Integrated Pest Management can be defined as a system of integrated prevention and treatment for pest animals do not cause problems. In Integrated Pest Management, pest problems can not be viewed as a single issue, namely the animal pest itself, but viewed from many aspects, namely environmental hygiene, pest animals living habits, life cycle of pest animals, breeding, and the environment preferred by pest animals .
The concept of Integrated Pest Management is to be cheap and not causing any danger to humans and the environment and this concept should be the basis in the preparation of pest control program. Each warehouse food must have a pest control program that is based on the concept above.
Based on the concept of Integrated Pest Management, pest control program can be divided into 3 parts, namely:
1. Prevention
2. Control
3. Monitoring

1. Prevention
Prevention is the best way. With prevention system is good and right, then the use of toxic chemicals can be avoided.
Prevention can be done in the following manner:
  1. Design and lay out Warehouse
A good warehouse design are:
- There is no crack in the door or window.
- There is no gap along the door
- No open holes
- Ventilation and windows should be covered with mosquito netting max size
16 mesh
- There is no gap between the floor by the door

Lay Out a good warehouse is:
- Toilets and Locker room should not be in the warehouse
- Place garbage should not be in the warehouse
- No open water disposal system was in the warehouse.
  1. Keeping Cleaning Warehouse
Pest animals are always looking for food and water for survival. Food and water will attract pest animals to come. By maintaining cleanliness of the warehouse is to eliminate pest animal food sources and eliminate sources of attraction.
  2. Environmental Controls
To live and breed, animal pest requires a specific environment. Generally they are enjoying the dark, damp, and warm. Therefore, to prevent pest animals do not breed in our workplace, so try not there a dark, damp, and warm. In other words, we do not provide a comfortable place to live pest animal.

2. Control
Precautions above also should be coupled with control of pest animals, either physical or chemical control.

Physical control can be con-done by creating barriers or trap for animals can not enter the warehouse.
Chemical control is the use of chemicals. Use of chemicals used here should be limited and carefully because it is very dangerous to the products, people and environment.

3. Monitoring
Level of pest animals should always be monitored, so that we can find out if there is an increase in number. And we can immediately take necessary action before the problem becomes serious.
Without monitoring we might as well create new problems is greater. With this monitoring, we can evaluate whether prevention and control measures we have implemented efficient enough?

Organization
To be successful pest control program in the warehouse, there should be a responsible employee to coordinate all activities of pest control. Employees must have received training in pest control.

The use of contractor services is allowed, but should still be under the responsibility of the employee. Good communication must still be done for pest control program can succeed.

Pest Control Relationships with Good Manufacturing Practices
Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) contains guidance on how to produce quality products, safe, and suitable for consumption. Discuss GMP factory building, manufacturing, raw material handling, processing, warehouse, retail, hygine, and prevention of pest animals.

By applying GMP means we are already implementing some of the Integrated Pest Management.

In order for the warehouse to be safe for the human as well as the for the quality of the products, it needs to be clean and free from infectious animals such as pest. And I agree that when using this control method, its effects on human health must be primarily considered.
