Some things  about the design of the warehouse which is the result of practical experience in planning and designing the layout and warehouse racking systems:
Output:
The design layout and warehouse racking systems and their estimated costs.

Criteria:
Efficient use of space, maximizing warehouse storage capacity and high performance of warehousing operations.



Principles  and Design Methodology:
- Design of warehouses based on strategic plans and business enterprises.
- Design is done by combining concepts and theories of design layout, as well as using some of the international standards in the design layout and racking systems for warehousing. Design process also consider the concepts of work systems design and ergonomics to produce the design of work places and systems that are safe, convenient, effective, and efficient.

- Estimated cost for each design  is calculated based on the  investment needs for the procurement of racking systems and material handling equipment (MHE)  according to the type and amount of both the equipment respectively.
- Needs types of MHE is determined based on volume and product characteristics, as well as the height of the rack. Determination of the number of MHE is done by considering the volume of products and the anticipated damage to the device. Consideration of this anticipation to avoid cessation of warehousing operations as a result there is no backup or replacement MHE.

- The results of data processing is used as the basis for the design layout and racking systems.  Several design alternatives  are based on the results of  data processing and information considerations of the company.
- To get the best design, an analysis of benefits and costs (cost and benefit analysis), both against each of the draft proposal nor the current conditions.



Stages of  Design:
(1) Discussion of strategic plan and business enterprise:
- Strategic planning and corporate business, particularly related to the need for warehouse capacity
- Target of increasing sales or volume of goods to be handled
(2) Observation and collection of field data, including:
- Images and data about the physical condition of warehouse is currently (or location / warehouse area),
- The characteristics and dimensions of the product,
- Dimensions of the cardboard used.
- Sales volume or the volume of goods to be handled
- Flow velocity (flow rate) of goods / products
(3) Processing and analysis of data, to:

- Calculation / prediction (increase)  the volume of product to be  handled within a specified period.
- Calculate the needs of the pallet position and block stacking,
- Determine the material handling equipment, and calculate the width of the hallway.
- Determine the type of racking up (include the determination of the number of rack-level and the number of pallets per bay).
(4) Design layout and racking system:
- Manufacture of image layout and racking systems.

I agree that design involves concepts and theories. The concept is the general ideas of what you are going to do in designing your warehouse building. Meanwhile theories are the principles that you are going to apply. You are mentioning also some principles that are useful in designing and thanks for this.
